Title: INFLUENCE OF LIGHTING DEVICES ON TRAFFIC FLOW AND ROAD ACCIDENTS
Abstract: NATIONAL AND REGIONAL STATISTICS CLEARLY SHOW THAT AT GRADE INTERURBAN INTERSECTIONS ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS SPOTS ON ROADS. TRAFFIC SIGNS AND SIGNALS USEFUL TO CONTROL TRAFFIC WHEN TRAFFIC DENSITY IS FAIRLY LOW OR NORMAL, DO NOT BRING AN ABSOLUTE IMPROVEMENT IN CASES OF VERY HIGH TRAFFIC INTENSITY AT INTERSECTIONS. FOR EXAMPLE THE MOST DANGEROUS ACCIDENT BLACK SPOTS IN THE BARCELONA REGION ARE SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS. THE ANALYSIS OF THE OPERATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS LOCATED AT DIFFERENT INTERSECTIONS ALONG THE C-246 ROAD SHOWS THAT THEY HAVE A VERY HARMFUL EFFECT ON TRAFFIC FLOW AND THAT THE APPARENT GAIN IN SAFETY DUE TO A REDUCTION IN HEAD-ON COLLISION ACCIDENT RATES IS COMPENSATED BY AN INCREASE IN REAR-END COLLISIONS. THE CAUSES OF THE INABILITY OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS TO PREVENT COLLISIONS AT INTERSECTIONS ARE ANALYZED EMPHASIZING THE DIFFERENCES IN SPEED, VISIBILITY AND DRIVER CONCENTRATION DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE DRIVER IS TRAVELLING IN TOWNS OR ON THE OPEN ROAD. AMONG POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS THE NECESSITY OF HAVING A LARGER SURFACE FOR INTERURBAN TRAFFIC SIGNALS IS MENTIONED. THE APPLICATION OF RESEARCH RESULTS TO THE CASTELLDEFELS MOTORWAY IS DESCRIBED.
