Abstract: Known in Russia as the Sapsan, or Peregrine Falcon, Russian Railway's (RZD's) first high-speed train is being launched this month with service between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Siemens was awarded a contract for a fleet of eight 10-car Sapsan trains in May 2006. Designed to operate in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius, the Sapsan has a wider body shell than its western European counterparts, very strict criteria for electromagnetic compatibility trains, and a lower threshold than European norms. RZD's plans to begin a new era of intercity rail travel in Russia are examined, including record speeds, investment, high speed projects, and priority fast travel projects.
