Title: INVESTIGATION OF THE RESISTANCE OF SURFACINGS TO STUDDED TYRES
Abstract: This research contract was aimed at determining the resistance of specially strengthened surfacings to the abrasive effect of studded tyres, by comparative studies of a series of pavements. It was necessary to take measures during the construction of the pavements so that the damaging effect of the studded tyres could be contrasted. The test methods used to determine the wear due to studs involved measuring the test pavements periodically for changes in thickness before and after the winter season. As an additional evaluation of the test pavements, skidding resistance measurements were also carried out. Included in the programme of research were further traffic censuses to establish the traffic loading as well as studies of the mix quality and the pavement as laid, in order to obtain characteristic data. On the basis of the measured thickness variations during the summer and the calculated compaction of the pavements, the plastic deformations were also determined. Results showed that hot rolled asphalt with Trinidad asphalt sprayed with pre-coated chippings provided a pavement with an increased resistance to studded tyres, as did the ab 10 with Trinidad admixture. Multiplication of the hot mix bituminous pavement by increasing the binder content and the filler content results in improved resistance to studded tyres, but care must be taken, that this is not obtained at the expense of reduced deformation resistance; furthermore, these pavements demonstrate a considerably reduced skidding resistance.
