Title: Mass Transit: How Does New Jersey Transit Spell Congestion Relief?
Abstract: In this article the New Jersey Transit’s ‘Access to the Region’s Core’ project is described. The $7.5 billion project is meant to increase commuter occupancy for the projected 1.5 million residents and potential customers in the next 25 years. Currently, the occupancy is at the maximum level possible for the system. The new project will effectively double the capacity from New Jersey to New York and will create two new stations aside from Penn. The article also provides a description of the dilapidated state of the commuter lines when control of the lines was transferred to New Jersey Transit from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) in 1983. Some of the projected economic benefits of the improvements include the elimination of 35,000 daily trans-Hudson automotive trips, the addition o $10 billion in gross regional production the area hopes to attain, and the addition of 6,000 new construction jobs for the area.
