Title: Influence of Pile and Geogrid on Bearing Capacity of Highway Embankment Foundation
Abstract: In order to study effect of geogrid and pile on a new highway soft soil foundation reinforcement, the plane strain elasto-plasticity finite element method was used to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation. Two-dimensional finite element model of the geogridreinforced and pile-supported foundation of the embankment was built. The effect of the geogrid on top of the piles to improve the soft soil foundation was analyzed. With the unchangeable rate of replacement, the influences of different pile diameters and distances between piles on bearing capacity and stability of the foundation were studied. Then, improving laws of bearing capacity of composite foundation were studied with increase of the rate of replacement. In order to reduce the total settlement of embankment and improve the non-uniform settlement, effects of two measures of reducing piles distance under the roadbed and the embankment slope were calculated. The finite element analysis result shows that the non-uniform settlement of highway foundation can be controlled effectively by geogrid and pile, especially for the soft soil foundation. Reducing the distance of the piles under road surface can improve the non-uniform settlement and reduce the embankment settlement.
