Abstract: uruguayen Eduardo Acevedo Díaz (1851-1921) occupe une place de choix dans la littérature du XIX e siècle de son pays.La critique voit en lui celui qui a élevé le roman national à un rang supérieur, grâce à son « cycle historique » composé des romans suivants : Ismael (1888), Nativa (1890), Grito de gloria (1893), et Lanza y sable (1914).Eduardo Acevedo Díaz est reconnu aujourd'hui, en Uruguay, pour son oeuvre littéraire.Cependant, comme tant d'autres intellectuels d'Amérique latine, il ne consacra que peu de temps à son travail de romancier.Il fut avant tout un homme politique profondément marqué et préoccupé par l'histoire de son époque.Cela l'incita à écrire des romans historiques, d'autant plus qu'il affirmait qu'on comprend mieux « l'Histoire dans le roman, que dans le « roman » de l'histoire » (c'est-à-dire la narrativité de l'histoire) 1 .La création littéraire, selon Acevedo Díaz, doit se nourrir de tous les éléments de la société qu'elle désire comprendre afin de pouvoir la refléter avec fidélité.Il attribue au récit historique « […] le secret d'instruire les esprits et d'éduquer les foulesmême quand les
