Title: Des coquillages comme outils de boucherie ? Approche expérimentale et amorce de réflexion sur la question des pratiques de boucherie au Paléolithique moyen en contexte littoral de l’Afrique du Nord
Abstract: Dans le cadre d’une expérimentation coordonnée par Émilie Campmas et Francesca Romagnoli en 2016, des coquilles de bivalve et de gastéropode (moule, patelle, vernis) ont été utilisées pour découper une carcasse de mouton. Elles ont été choisies car elles figurent parmi les espèces les plus abondantes dans les sites archéologiques des régions méditerranéennes d’Europe et d’Afrique du Nord et certaines d’entre elles ont été identifiées comme des outils dans des sites moustériens. Ces expériences complètent le référentiel « Des Traces et des Hommes » sur les stries de boucherie. Les tests en aveugle réalisés à partir de l’observation de l’emplacement des stries montrent également la pertinence de ce référentiel pour l’interprétation des stries en termes d’opérations de boucherie (dépouillement, décharnement, etc.). Les résultats indiquent que les patelles (Patella sp.) sont peu propices à ce type d’activités alors que les coquilles de moule (Mytilus sp.) et de vernis (Callista chione) peuvent être utilisées pour l’ensemble des opérations nécessitant un outil tranchant. En raison de leur forme différente, leur performance est en revanche très variable. Mytilus sp. est plus efficace pour le dépouillement et le décharnement tandis que Callista chione est plus opérant pour la désarticulation et le prélèvement des tendons. À l’exclusion du décharnement avec des coquilles de Mytilus sp., toutes les opérations de boucherie sont plus difficiles à mener avec des coquilles qu’avec des outils en silex. Une approche préliminaire sur la micromorphologie des stries de boucherie à partir d’observations au microscope confocal montre que ces traces entrent dans la variabilité des traces de boucherie obtenues à partir d’outils lithiques. Des différences micromorphologiques selon le taxon utilisé et l’activité menée ont pu être observées mais un référentiel plus conséquent serait nécessaire pour conforter ces résultats préliminaires. La question d’une potentielle utilisation de coquilles sur le littoral d’Afrique du Nord durant le Paléolithique moyen pouvant expliquer la faible fréquence des stries de boucherie sur les ossements de grands ongulés n’a pu être tranchée à partir des résultats obtenus.
