Abstract: Abstract “The tone is the voice without which one cannot even begin to sing,” wrote Theobald Boehm in The Flute and Flute-Playing. 1 One needs no higher authority to assert the status of flute tone as the most important element of flute playing. It is the flute’s tone that gives the instrument its distinctive quality. Historically, tone has been the reason for the flute’s popularity among players and listeners alike. Tone, wrote the great English flutist Charles Nicholson, is “the proudest boast of the instrument.”
