Abstract: Sobriquets anciens et . modernes du Hainautpar EM.DONY.Dans nos milieux, aucune étude systématique n'a été consacrée aux surnoms individuels de jadis et de naguère.L'anthroponymie n'en est elle-même qu'à ses tout prem~ers débuts : répertoires de noms et matériaux d'enquêtes font défaut.En France ont paru : le Dictionnaire des noms de LoRÉDAN LARCHEY (Paris, 1880), les travaux de FERD.BRUNOT (1922 et 1936) et ALB.DAUZAT (1925 et 1939, 5e éd.) ; en Allemagne, ceux de FCERSTEMANN ; en Hollande, ceux de WINCKLER; en Suisse romande, de MuRET et AEBISCHER; là et ailleurs, d'autres encore.Les sobriquets sont l'origine unique de milliers de patronymes ; ils constituent les manifestations, extériorisées par Ie langage courant, de la mentalité collective des aïeux ; émanation du terroir même, ils en ont la saveur corrosive.Rares sont les domaines ou la liberté des ancêtres, jusqu'à la licence, s'est exercée quotidiennement, sans nulle entrave: celui des sobriquets est de ceux-là.Il est un autre motif de ne pas tarder à les recueillir : Ie sobriquet est en régression, à l'étranger comme chez nous, même dans le pays rural et là surtout ou il o:ffre de l'intérêt; tous les observateurs l'~ttestent.Quelles sont les causes de ce fait?Il apparaît d'autant plus patent et rapide, d'après A.
