Title: La noblesse urbaine à travers les procès de l’ordre de Malte. L’exemple du second ordre toulousain (xvie-xviie siècles)
Abstract: Jusque dans les années 1990, beaucoup de chercheurs pensaient que la noblesse avait quitté les villes à la fin du Moyen Âge, y retournant seulement au xviie siècle. Les nobles auraient été chassés par l’arrivée au pouvoir d’une nouvelle élite, la bourgeoisie. De nouveaux travaux montrent que ces conclusions doivent être nuancées. Des sources inédites, comme les procès de noblesse de l’ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, permettent de changer notre regard sur ce champ particulier de l’histoire sociale de la première modernité. En effet, les présentés devaient prouver la noblesse de leur famille à travers des témoignages et des preuves écrites, remontant parfois fort loin dans leur généalogie. Parmi ces enquêtes, celles du Prieuré de Toulouse n’ont jamais été étudiées de façon exhaustive. En analysant la composition et les pièces de 22 dossiers, nous avons relevé des éléments sur le mode de vie, les stratégies et les identités des familles nobles toulousaines. Ce travail montre que, loin d’avoir disparu, la noblesse de cette riche et puissante ville a résisté et connu des mutations comparables à celles des autres groupes nobiliaires urbains. Cela nous permet aussi de saisir ce qui fait la spécificité du second ordre toulousain, sa composition, son fonctionnement. Nous pouvons aussi esquisser des pistes de recherche concernant les réseaux qui liaient ces familles entre elles.
