Title: Tracing as Meaning: Material and Immaterial Interplay in Michelangelo’s Drawing of Tityus/Christ
Abstract: Il disegno recto-verso di Tizio/Cristo, conservato nella Royal Collection a Windsor, è fra i doni più famosi che Michelangelo fece al giovane nobiluomo romano Tommaso de' Cavalieri. Finora la maggior parte degli studi ha privilegiato la figura mitologica sul recto, eseguita con grande raffinatezza. Il presente contributo, invece dà altrettanto valore al soggetto cristologico sul verso, disegnato tracciando i contorni del suo doppio al rovescio. Sebbene nel Rinascimento l'atto di tracciare rappresentasse un processo intermedio nella realizzazione di un'opera d'arte, nel disegno michelangiolesco questa tecnica grafica si carica di un significato autonomo. Attraverso l'uso ragionato del tracciare, il disegno di Michelangelo condensa il valore artistico e teologico della luce che trapassa il foglio di carta. La capacità di Cavalieri di esplorare questa dialettica fra il materiale e l'immateriale rimanda ad altri oggetti a doppia faccia, come gli intagli di cristallo di rocca, e a concetti analoghi nelle poesie di Michelangelo.
