Abstract: Environmental hormone disruptors, also known as endocrine disruptors, are chemicals that alter normal endocrine function and consequently cause adverse health effects in an intact organism, or its progeny, or (sub) populations. Although many chemicals have been identified as endocrine active, very few chemicals have been clearly established as causing endocrine disruption in humans. Over the past 25 years, individual countries and international governments and organizations have initiated programs to evaluate endocrine disruptors. For example, the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program aims to develop validated methods to identify potential endocrine disruptors, determine adverse effects and dose-response, and assess and manage risks, as needed.
