Abstract: This article reviews the history of the international treatment of war crimes and the conduct of war crimes trials. Much of our current understanding of war crimes and their prosecution come from the actions taken immediately after World War II. The ideas developed about human rights and crimes against humanity continue to evolve as is evident in the two International Tribunals established by the Security Council of the United Nations and the development of the International Criminal Court.
