It illustrates positioning of the animal and briefly describes the procedure. The patient is placed in lateral recumbency with the upper and lower lips clipped, prepped, and draped in. A sterile mouth gag can be placed on the down side to maintain access to the oral cavity without the need for manual retraction. A full thickness incision is made at the commissure to allow exposure of the vertical ramus of the mandible. The osteotomies can be performed with a high speed drill, an osteotome and mallet, or an oscillating saw. For a full mandibulectomy, the rostral cut is typically at the symphysis (but can be altered depending on the location of the lesion) and is performed first to allow lateral retraction of the mandible. Closure performed by approximating the deeper layers first in an interrupted or continuous suture pattern.Read More
