Title: Il repertorio iconografico della ceramica africana a rilievo del IV-V secolo d.C.
Abstract: Si analizza il repertorio iconografico della sigillata africana C decorata a rilievi applicati e prodotta nella Tunisia centrale – in buona misura nell’atelier di Sidi Marzouk Tounsi – dalla fine del III alla metà del V secolo d. C. Particolare attenzione viene prestata ad un tipo di coppa emisferica, che si segnala per la varietà delle iconografie, dei motivi decorativi e degli schemi compositivi. Fra le raffigurazioni mitologiche riscuote particolare successo il ciclo delle imprese di Ercole, che si presta alla creazione di un servizio di sei o di dodici vasi decorati ; sono testimoniate anche storie ed avventure «minori » dell’eroe tebano, forse riflesso della redazione di opere letterarie o teatrali. Nell’ambito dei temi vetero-testamentari, il motivo del sacrificio di Abramo si dispiega sulla superficie dei vasi in episodi successivi del racconto biblico, con singolari varianti e talora con l’associazione di altri temi paleocristiani. Accanto ai soggetti più tipici dell’immaginario tardo-antico, si esamina il caso di una coppa in cui si fondono il tema mitologico (il ratto di Ganimede) e il tema cristiano (la salvaguardia della vigna intesa come il popolo dei cristiani). In sintesi i ceramisti africani danno prova di una grande abilità nell’assemblaggio dei motivi figurativi, non scevra di una capacità di adattamento alle necessità narrative delle composizioni.
