Abstract: The Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Data Portal is a secure data analysis environment, with accompanying tools, that brings together data from >30 UK cohorts for collaborative translational research aiming to discover new interventions for dementias and enrich data focused research in the field of dementias discovery and care. The Data Portal brings researcher to the data, enabling efficient access to multiple independent datasets and removing the need for the repeated transfer of large and complex datasets. Led by Swansea University, the DPUK Data Portal is housed on an instance of UK Secure eResearch Platform, an infrastructure that brings a federated solution to sharing data in order to remotely manage and share dementias research data across the scientific community and provide state of the art integrated technologies for clinical, genetic, imaging and wearables data for the creation of an enriched epidemiological research community in dementias. The Data Portal also supports large-scale experimental medicine and increasing data linkage capability. Core datasets from DPUK are held in a data repository for access by bona-fide researchers in a secure remote environment, enabling rapid access. Data ownership remains with the dataset providers and their governance requirements are implemented and overseen by the data providers themselves. The Data Portal and its metadata tools will be demonstrated online to illustrate the process of characterising datasets for specific analyses, and the data access process. Illustrative analyses will be presented. Metadata tools include separate tools for characterising cohorts, variable and participants. Convenient and rapid access to multiple independent datasets will become increasingly important for the testing of emerging hypotheses and the confirmation of findings. The DPUK Data Portal provides an environment for the wider dementia research community that is unusual in its simplicity and unique in the depth and breadth of available data.
