Abstract: This chapter discusses Vienna as an important intellectual center for Hebrew modernism. Within a few years around World War I, Hebrew and Yiddish literature blossomed in Vienna. The diaries and memoirs of this period reveal a close and fertile collaboration between the Hebrew and the Yiddish writers. Literary cafés such as Café Griensteidl and Café Central were also indispensable for the creation of Viennese modernism. These coffeehouses had a very high Jewish presence, bringing immigrant Hebrew and Yiddish writers together and opening new paths for them.
