Abstract: An overview on the biological cycle, green chemistry, sustainability, biorefinery, the profession of bioprocess engineers, and the text is presented in this introductory chapter. Sustainability and green chemistry are important to the practice of bioprocess engineers. Biorefinery is a desired approach to provide the products of human needs, putting the human needs directly into the biological cycle. Both biotransformation and chemical transformations are important to biorefinery. Genetic manipulations and biotransformation are important to the bioprocess engineering profession. Because of the fundamental impact genetic manipulation and biotransformation can have on the biological cycle, ethics and regulations are critical to the practice of bioprocess engineers. It is the intention that this text can be used as a senior and/or graduate text for bioprocess engineering students. It may also be served as a reference and/or graduate text for chemical kinetics, chemical reactor analysis, and bioprocess systems engineering. In the same time, we have inserted materials, more advanced analysis or complex systems in the text as an extension to the introductory material. It is our aim that this text can serve equally as a reference or resource for further research or development.
