Title: Cluster connections give communities economic and educational boost
Abstract: The term clustering is used to describe the tendency of businesses specialising in a particular industry to establish themselves in regional communities. This affords many advantages including simpler and faster business transaction, knowledge sharing and proximity to suppliers and customers. Many community colleges are specialising in order to provide the training required to reproduce and upgrade the workforce necessary to the economic success of clusters. This article examines four industry sites, two in the United States, one in Denmark and one in Ireland, where local community colleges have met the specific education and training needs of local industry. The author demonstrates how clusters interact and cooperate with colleges and how colleges affect clusters and the host economy. The benefits to clusters and host regions are discussed from the perspective of both employers and educators.
