Title: The laminated log industry: an overview of production and distribution.
Abstract: Laminated house logs, manufactured from kiln-dried lumber, have a similar appearance to traditional, solid house logs, but with enhanced performance characteristics. This paper describes the properties of laminated logs and quantifies the size and product flows of this developing industry. A survey questionnaire was mailed to the five manufacturers currently producing laminated house logs to determine the market size and geographic destinations of the product. In 1994, 622,000 lineal feet of laminated house logs were produced in the United States, generating approximately $4.15 million in gross revenues. Four species were used, including western redcedar, southern yellow pine, ponderosa pine, and lodgepole pine. Both dimension lumber and board grades were used. In 1994, the laminated log market was primarily domestic, with 81.7 percent of production sold within the United States. About 12 percent of the production was sold to Pacific Rim countries, and a little over 6 percent was sold to European countries. While currently enjoying only a small portion of the current market for house logs, the laminated house-log industry appears to have significant potential for growth.
