Title: Regional differences in the eastern hardwood sawmilling industry
Abstract: The eastern hardwood sawmilling industry is a diffused group of at least 4,500 manufacturers spread over 34 states. However, 85 percent of the hardwood lumber is manufactured in 16 states. This paper reviews the theoretical factors affecting sawmill size and incorporates this information in an analysis of the hardwood sawmilling industry in 16 major eastern hardwood production states. Large variations in the average size of hardwood sawmills were found in the states examined. Southern hardwood sawmills were significantly larger than sawmills located in the northern regions. Estimated average hardwood sawmill size ranged from 7.56 million board feet per year in Mississippi to 1.7 million board feet per year in Missouri. Overall, 53 percent of the lumber produced in the major hardwood production states is manufactured by only 14 percent of the mills, and less than 5 percent of the sawmills accounted for over 28 percent of the production in the states analyzed.
