In its construction, this skewed, two-span bridge demonstrates the shift from pin-connected railroad bridges to riveted steel truss construction in the face of the increased weight and speeds of locomotives and rolling stock during this period. In addition, the construction of Bridge N.D.2F and the history of the National Docks Branch (NDB) evidence the rapid expansion of northern New Jersey port facilities and the competition among rail lines to provide access to these lucrative markets.
