Abstract: Publikacja prezentuje fascynację europejskich artystów i intelektualistów sztuką japońską, a w szczególności drzeworytem ukiyo-e. Było to istotne zjawisko kultury przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Autorki skoncentrowały się na inspiracjach widocznych w dziełach artystów związanych z impresjonizmem i postimpresjonizmem francuskim, takich jak Eduard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin oraz Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Ponadto omówione zostały wpływy sztuki japońskiej na twórczość malarzy akademickich, np. George'a Hendrika Breitnera, znakomitego malarza ewoluującego od realizmu do impresjonizmu oraz artystów związanych z kolonialną Afryką Południową.
