Title: Future needs from the Smart Mega City (SMC) plans—smart green city—the case of Istanbul
Abstract: As a complex result with several dimensions, the concept of "Smart City" has become increasingly widespread and various projects have been passed on to international platforms. The vision of a smart city depends on the importance of technology, especially Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Environmental themes are an important part of intelligent city goals. In smart city vision, initiatives focus on improving city wisdom: When technology-based solutions that reintegrate human life with green are taken into consideration, the concept of "Smart City" evolves into the concept of "Smart Green City." Istanbul is the only city in the world that is located on two continents—Europe and Asia. According to the UN World Cities Report, it is the 15th most populated city in the world, where 15 million people are living. Istanbul was the capital as well as a center for trade and distribution from the mid-16th century till the beginning of the 20th century. With its huge population, Istanbul has hosted for ages communities from different civilizations and cultures who lived in harmony. Together with its characteristics as smart green city, in 2018, Istanbul has been selected as one of the "City of Design" within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Green smart city projects—intelligent transportation solutions, energy-saving solutions, conservation of green spaces, etc.—are being developed and used in Istanbul as well. The leading role in the implementation of the vision of a smart city is Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality which established an office and leads this vision.
