Title: Clinical significance of detecting changes of serum thyroid hormones in levels patients with gastrointestinal cancer
Abstract: Objective: To explore the changes of serum thyroid hormone levels in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methods: Serum TT{sub 3}, FT{sub 3}, TT{sub 4}, FT{sub 4} and TSH levels were measured with RIA in 33 patients with gastrointestinal cancer and 42 controls. Results: Serum TT{sub 3} and FT{sub 3} levels in patients with early stage gastrointestinal cancer were significantly lower than those in controls (P 0.05). TSH no significant change was observed. TT{sub 3}, FT{sub 3}, T{sub 4} and FT{sub 4} levels in patients with late gastrointestinal cancer were notably lower than those in patients with early stage cancer (P < 0.01). TSH levels of the patients in late stage were slightly lowered but not significantly. Conclusion: Detecting serum thyroid hormones levels in patients with gastrointestinal cancer is helpful for the assessment of severity and prognosis of the disease. (authors)
