Abstract: Given that almost everything about the life, reign and death of Anne Boleyn is a matter of debate, from facts such as the year of her birth to her motivations, it is not surprising that she has become a favourite subject of historical novelists, playwrights and, more recently, producers of movies and television shows. The sheer scope of representations of her story speaks to the evergreen appeal of that tale, as well as her capacity to speak to us as an avatar of feminine power and sexuality. Anne Boleyn’s capacity to hold together contradictory meanings has ensured the durability of her image: she can simultaneously be imagined as femme fatale and victim, predator and prey, reformer and cynic.
