Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this article is to draw attention to work on the reign of King Francis I of France (1515–47) produced since 1994, when my own Renaissance Warrior and Patron: the Reign of Francis I was published. Little that is new has been added to the political history of the reign, but fresh light has been shed on the court – following an exploration of hitherto neglected Italian archives – on the king's artistic patronage and also on his financiers. The significance of Francis’ patronage of humanism has been questioned. More attention is focusing on the last ten years of the reign. Once dismissed as a playboy, Francis I, whose 500th anniversary passed almost unnoticed in France, is now taken more seriously.
