Title: Questioning Motherhood: Figures of Domesticity and Emancipation in George Eliot’s Fiction
Abstract: Cet article a pour ambition de souligner les tensions inhérentes à la représentation de la maternité dans la fiction de George Eliot, qui donne à voir relativement peu de figures maternelles admirables tandis que nombre d’héroïnes s’affranchissent du modèle structurant imposé par la société victorienne, mettant à mal un système qui érige les femmes (fille, épouse et surtout mère) en modèles de vertu et de moralité. Eliot semble tiraillée entre sa foi conservatrice dans la mission maternelle des femmes, et son intuition qu’il incombe à certaines femmes d’explorer de nouvelles voies anticonformistes. Cette position peu confortable reflète ses interrogations quant à son propre positionnement ambigu comme femme et artiste, elle qui n’était ni complètement épouse, ni complètement mère, mais sans aucun doute une « Mutter » très atypique.
