Title: Un cosmoscape sous le Bouddha : le piédestal de l’icône principale de Yakushi-ji, soutien de l’empire des souverains
Abstract: L'icône principale du temple japonais de Yakushi-ji est un Bouddha de la médecine (Yakushi) en bronze haut de 254,7 cm, assis les jambes croisées sur un piédestal à plusieurs niveaux de 152 cm, et flanqué de deux bodhisattva. Visuellement aussi aboutis et historiquement aussi rares que cette triade colossale du début du viiie siècle, ce sont les reliefs, singuliers et remarquables, sur les quatre côtés de son piédestal qui ont longtemps fasciné les chercheurs. Ce piédestal, témoin visuel du discours des souverains du Yamato, commanditaires de l'icône, situe le bouddhisme et le gouvernement juste dans un empire imaginaire de type chinois en construction, vers 650-750. Les figures et les motifs du piédestal s'accordent avec les concepts énoncés dans les œuvres littéraires classiques contemporaines. Cette première étude consacrée au Yakushi-ji dans une langue autre que le japonais propose une nouvelle interprétation du piédestal comme cosmographie – la cosmologie d'un royaume impérial imaginé par ses créateurs – avec un Bouddha guérisseur/gouverneur juste, omniprésent, à son sommet.
