Title: Determination of Cytotoxicity of Actinobacterial Extracts and Metabolites
Abstract: In vitro evaluation of any chemicals for cytotoxicity is the pre-requisite for its further applications. Important for any chemicals such as drugs, food colorants, pesticides, etc. Chemicals such as drugs and pesticides have different cytotoxicity mechanisms in vitro. In order to determine the cell death cytotoxicity, there is a need for cheap, reliable, and reproducible short-term cytotoxicity and cell viability assays. Cytotoxicity and cell viability assays are based on various cell functions. A wide range of cytotoxicity assays is currently used in the fields of toxicology and pharmacology. These assays include dye exclusion assays, colorimetric assays, fluorometric assays, and luminometric assays. Choosing the appropriate assay is important for obtaining accurate and reliable results. The availability of the cell lines in the laboratory where the study is to be performed, test compounds, detection mechanism, specificity, and sensitivity are the parameters need to be selected while choosing the cytotoxicity assays. In this chapter we have described some in vitro and in vivo methods for screening actinobacterial extracts/metabolites for cytotoxic activity.
