Title: Hemoperfusion combined with plasma exchange in the treatment of acute paraquat poisoning
Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects of hemoperfusion and plasma exchange in the treatment of acute paraquat poisoning. Methods One hundred and twelve adults who were treated for acute paraquat poisoning at the Emergency Department of our hospital during 2010 January and 2012 December were retrospectively studied. The participants were then assigned to three groups:the conventional therapy group was treated with medicine; the medication + blood perfusion group was treated with medication plus hemopeffusion; while the blood perfusion combined with plasma exchange group was treated with medication + blood perfusion plus plasma exchange.Cure rate, mean survival tine, drug concentration and inflammatory mediators were measured at baseline and after the intervention.Students t test and Chi-square test were used for data analysis. Results In comparison with the conventional therapy group, the hemoperfusion group and the blood perfusion combined with plasma exchange group showed statistically significant improvement in cure rate, mean survival time, paraquat in blood and inflammatory medium concentration (all P < 0.05).In addition, hemopeffusion combined with plasma exchange group indicated better cure rate, mean survival time, paraquat in blood and inflammatory medium concentration than the hemoperfusion group (all P < 0.05).Conclusion Hemoperfusion plus plasma exchange may have remarkable curative effect on acute paraquat poisoning.
