He has published prolifically and is the author of Inventing Our Selves: Psychology, Power and Personhood (1996, paperback 1998), Governing the Soul: The Shaping of the Private Self (1990, second edition 1999) and Powers of Freedom: Reframing Political Thought (published in March 1999) as well as numerous chapters and articles. He has served as joint editor of the journals Ideology and Consciousness and Politics and Power and is currently Managing Editor of Economy and Society.
