Title: The storming of the Bastille: The technique of Francis Webb's poetry
Abstract: On 23 November 1973, a coronary occlusion brought to a premature end one of the most troubled and productive careers, and perhaps one of the greatest intellects in Australian poetry. Using that intellect to its capacity in the system of his own poetic diction, Francis Webb has stormed the Bastille of contemporary expectations about poetry. Though writing, as he does, within the boundaries of an inherited tradition of Catholic thought, and at times, under conditions of immense personal suffering, this poet should, more than any other in Australian literature, force a reappraisal of ideas about the realization of the poetic experience.
