Over the last 10 years, in sports pedagogy in Germany there has been a call
for an erziehender Sportunterricht, which when translated means that physical
education should give priority to the educational aspects of its remit. This type
of education would incorporate movement-oriented and personality-oriented
learning, such as achieving social competences or self-determination, an objective reflected in what has been called the ‘dual contract’ of physical education in
German schools. That is, education ‘in’ and ‘through’ physical education. This
claim is also made for school sports, since physical education and sports are not
separated in the German sport curriculum. These claims call for a review of the
contents, structures and teaching methods used in physical education (PE) as well
as the role of the PE teacher. The subsequent debate exposed an ‘instructional
gap’ or Vermittlungslucke (Prohl, 2004), which implies a discrepancy between
scholarly and educational policy claims on one hand and classroom reality or
rather established teaching methods on the other hand (Casey and Dyson, 2009).Read More
