Carmen Martín Gaite: el juego de la vida y la literatura es una recopilación de doce ensayos de José Jurado Morales que se hallaban dispersos en diversas publicaciones, más dos inéditos. Ha sido, pues, una idea acertada la de reunirlos en este volumen de fácil acceso. El autor ha dotado al libro de coherencia y continuidad [End Page 153] mediante una cuidadosa división en bloques temáticos y genéricos que abarcan gran parte de la obra de Martín Gaite. Una clarificadora introducción sintetiza el contenido de cada sección y explica la elección del título, el cual se propone capturar el "sentido lúdico de la vida y de la literatura" (12) de Martín Gaite, así como la acentuada "conexión de vida y literatura" (23) presente en su obra. El libro consta de cinco bloques que contienen capítulos independientes. El sexto bloque ("Texto sobre texto") es un recuento comentado de los estudios académicos sobre la escritora publicados hasta el 2000, año de su muerte. El primer bloque ("El fundamento autobiográfico"), que se compone de tres capítulos, estudia los modos en que las experiencias vitales de Martín Gaite se entrelazan en su obra novelística y poética. Jurado Morales atribuye el persistente elemento autobiográfico de su literatura al deseo de descifrar su identidad, por lo que su narrativa, sugiere, "debe ser incluida en el seno de la literatura del autodescubrimiento" (38). "Experiencia vital y escritura poética" es especialmente destacable por la escasa atención que la crítica le ha dedicado a este aspecto de su obra. Martín Gaite entendía la poesía como introspección, indagación y conocimiento del yo más íntimo. La postura vital de la autora fue evolucionando desde unos poemas juveniles esperanzados en el futuro hasta llegar al desencanto, la soledad y el cansancio vital de sus últimas composiciones, ya tras la muerte de su única hija en 1985. El segundo bloque ("Amistad y literatura: Ignacio Aldecoa") consiste en dos capítulos que indagan en la relación personal y literaria de Martín Gaite con el escritor de su misma generación Ignacio Aldecoa. El autor se propone "establecer las relaciones humanas y las conexiones literarias entre uno y otro" desde que se conocieron en 1943 (15), y demuestra claramente la inmensa influencia que supuso Aldecoa tanto en la vida personal como en la carrera literaria de la escritora. El tercer bloque ("Etapas de aprendizaje: cuentos del medio siglo") consta de dos capítulos. En "'Un día de libertad', primer cuento de Martín Gaite," se argumenta que en este relato se hallan, en germen, "una serie de rasgos definidores de toda la obra de Martín Gaite" (93), así como elementos propios de la narrativa del medio siglo y las influencias de Albert Camus, Jean Paul Sartre y Franz Kafka. "Algo más que cuentos de mujeres" se aproxima al conjunto de su narrativa breve desde el prisma de esta calificación que la propia Martín Gaite utilizó en el prólogo a sus Cuentos completos en 1978. Jurado Morales cuestiona esta etiqueta que, a su parecer, es simplificadora porque induce a pensar que la autora "hace gala de una postura abiertamente feminista en un sentido estricto" (124). En cambio, arguye que, en los personajes femeninos de estos relatos testimoniales, Martín Gaite encarna valores, comportamientos y carencias que representaban al conjunto de la sociedad española de posguerra. Concluye, por tanto, que "más que cuentos de mujeres, los suyos son cuentos del ser humano" (129). El cuarto bloque ("El arte de pensar") se centra en la faceta ensayística de la escritora y contiene cuatro capítulos, los dos primeros inéditos.
