Some ephemera was collected from the time it was produced, while other ephemera was manufactured specifically for collectors. Until the end of the eighteenth century, most ephemera was printed by book printers, but in the nineteenth century, new technologies such as chromolithography led to specialization in the production of an increasing variety of ephemera. As artifacts of everyday life, most ephemera has been doomed to disappear, but some has survived in archives and scrapbooks and because of the interest of collectors. While ephemera is always at risk of being dispersed or lost, collectors play a large role in the ongoing process of preserving it and shaping its meaning.
