Athletes with non-proper dietary intake such as consuming less than energy intake, nutrient and optimal fluid will severely decrease their performance, ability to recover, responsiveness to training and will likely prone to injury. This study was conducted to assess the nutritional status of university college male team sports athletes. A cross-sectional study was used in this study. This study involved 40 male university college team sports athletes, which consists of 20 volleyball athletes and 20 basketball athletes. The body composition was assessed through Air-Displacement Plethysmography. Dietary intake was measured through recording of three days 24 hours dietary record. The mean body weight, height and body fat percentage were 71.7±6.7kg, 174.5±7.2cm and 14.4±4.7% for volleyball athletes and 69.6±11.5kg, 177.1±5.7cm and 10.5±5.6% for basketball athletes. The study revealed that nutrients intakes of carbohydrate and protein were inadequate for both volleyball and basketball athletes compared with DC/ACSM. The fat intake were excessed for both volleyball and basketball athletes compared with DC/ACSM. The nutrients intake of calcium, thiamin and niacin were both inadequate for both volleyball and basketball athletes compared with RNI Malaysia. Overall, only iron and riboflavin intake of most volleyball and basketball athletes met the RNI. The Pearson correlation showed that fat intake contribute to the higher body fat percentage for both volleyball and basketball athletes. As good nutrition plays an important role in sports, athletes should practice a proper dietary intake in order to increase their performance.Read More
