Title: Un patrimoine protestant méconnu : les cimetières familiaux
Abstract: L'interdiction du protestantisme en France, de 1685 à 1787, et la disparition des cimetières protestants, ont contraint les « nouveaux convertis » restés secrètement fidèles à leur foi à se faire enterrer hors du cimetière catholique : dans les caves, les jardins, les prés. Les autorités ont fini par fermer les yeux (à partir d'une déclaration de 1736), dès lors que la mort était dûment signalée par écrit, et une tradition est née, qui a survécu jusqu'à nos jours, devenant un signe fort de l'identité huguenote – et des paysages protestants - dans la France contemporaine. Ces cimetières familiaux, au nombre de plusieurs milliers dans les régions rurales protestantes, très inégalement connus et conservés, commencent à être étudiés : forme de l'enclos, présence ou non d'un arbre signal, inscriptions bibliques. L'article propose une première mise au point à propos de ce patrimoine faussement familier.
