Title: Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) development status
Abstract: Data from a pilot plant operating at utility conditions is needed before atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) can be commercialized for utility operations. The TVA's 20 MW AFBC pilot plant began operation in May 1982 to obtain this data. Utility-applicable components will be simulated to resolve technical problems. Combustion efficiency, limestone use, NOx control, material selection, coal and limestone feedings, and load control will all be studied. A test program has been undertaken to develop AFBC for utility application. Some technical support activities on coal/limestone feed, and mathematical models have also been undertaken. These tests are expected to confirm performance capabilities which have been achieved at bench scale.
