Title: Emotional Development in Children with Developmental Disabilities
Abstract: Abstract Research into the emotional development of children with developmental disabilities has dramatically increased over the past decade. Studies investigating the development of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) account for the largest increase in the field, but progress has also been made in better understanding emotional development in children with Down syndrome (DS). This chapter reviews the evidence on emotional strengths and weaknesses in children with autism, DS, and other developmental disorders. It identifies continuing gaps in our knowledge of emotional development and suggests some promising lines of research for the future.
