Abstract: The objective of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Second Rural Roads Project for India is to achieve broader and more sustainable access to markets and social services by the rural population in participating districts. Some of the negative impacts include: (i) vulnerability to natural hazards such as landslides or slips or flooding etc.; (ii) felling of trees outside the protected areas; (iii) loss of productive agricultural land; (iv) diversion of forest land; (v) damage to cultural or religious properties; and (vi) environmental features as marshy areas and sand dunes. some of the mitigation measures include: (i) protection of lands on valley side from debris due to construction or cutting; (ii) safe disposal of wastes; (iii) avoidance of impacts for cultural properties due to the project; (iv) protection of slopes in case of alignment on embankments; and (v) maintenance of machinery and equipment to avoid pollution.
