Title: Tourism and Melbourne's laneways: The making of hosier lane
Abstract: Melbourne's laneways have been promoted as an integral element of the tourist experience, through campaigns that focus on their edginess, linked to street art, coffee and small bar culture, and the importance of discovery of these hidden urban sites. An exemplar is Hosier Lane, which features prominently in the city's destination marketing. It is however a site of contestation involving various stakeholders, including developers, planners, artists and residents, while recent media reports have highlighted issues of drug use, homelessness and abuse of tourists in the Lane. In this qualitative case study, interviews were conducted with 11 stakeholders, aimed at exploring tensions between this history of contestation and the promotion of Hosier Lane to visitors. Findings suggest that the former contributes to the authenticity of the Lane in the eyes of stakeholders; however they acknowledge the need to manage the future of Melbourne's laneways, to ensure their sustainability as tourist attractions.
