Title: Paradoxically speaking: Community tourism: Discovering Malta and Gozo through its people and culture - diverging or converging sustainability issues?
Abstract: This research is focused on the role that village communities can have in contributing to the tourist experiential-learning experience. The research evaluates how such communities can have a better share of the benefits that are generally attributed to more traditional holiday destinations. The research is based upon a current on-going project titled: 'Discovering Malta and Gozo through its People and Culture' (Jones and Zarb, 2017). The research assesses how effective communitybased tourism has been in developing alternative forms of tourism based upon community, heritage and culture. It also evaluates some of the key lessons that can be learnt from community engagement. The study is based upon action research and a qualitative research approach using three local villages on the Maltese islands.
