To do so, I will examine two recent television adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories: BBC's Sherlock (2010-) and CBS's Elementary (2012-). This choice responds to the fact that although both series are based on the same original text, each takes a completely different position in terms of gender representation. I will argue that although Sherlock appears to be an inclusive and progressive show, it is in fact frequently conservative. On the other hand, Elementary consistently offers characters and storylines that are commonly gender-inclusive and progressive.Read More
