Title: Ageing Phenomena in Polymers: A Short Survey
Abstract: Polymers have become enormously important in today's industrial development. This chapter reviews a series of important ageing phenomena in polymers, always keeping the consequence on engineering applications in mind. There are different ways to subdivide the definition of 'ageing' in the case of polymers. Ageing was distinguished by the source of the trigger into intrinsic ageing and extrinsic ageing. Oxidation of polymers is a multi-process phenomenon since it is affected by physical phenomena such as diffusion as well as by chemical reactions affecting the macromolecular structure. The chapter provides a compilation of different methods that facilitate the experimental investigation of the ageing behaviour of polymers. It also provides a brief survey with respect to the changing properties of polymers provoked by ageing effects. The estimation of the lifetime or the aging properties of polymer components should always be carried out with great care and on the basis of comprehensive experimental investigations.
