Abstract: Southeast Missouri Transportation moves Missourians in the far southeastern part of the state with a three decades old service that is always changing to meet its passenger needs. It is one of the oldest rural public transportation systems and its creation came about in response to a very real need in the community and did not utilize government funding. A number of local volunteer groups in Southeast Missouri recognized that transportation was the solution for most problems being addressed and they approached the Missouri Department of Community Development in the early 1970s to search for better mobility strategies. A nonprofit corporation set up shop and started serving elderly residents and people with disabilities n 1973 with three vans. Today Southeast Missouri Transportation operates a fleet of 116 vehicles out of their own facility in order to connect the general public in 26 counties in Southeast and South Central Missouri.
