Abstract: Nachdem Bernhard 1972 mit Der Ignorant und der Wahnsinnige ein kontroverses Debüt bei den Salzburger Festspielen gefeiert hatte (das Stück wurde nach der Premiere abgesetzt, da das geforderte Abschalten des Notlichts feuerpolizeilich untersagt worden war; s. Kap. IV.86), folgte mit Die Macht der Gewohnheit (1974) eine Erfolgsproduktion nach. Beflügelt von der Freude über den Dramatiker-Preis der Stadt Hannover, der ihm dafür zuerkannt wurde, machte sich Bernhard gegen Ende des Jahres 1974 an die Erarbeitung eines neuen Stücks, das er dem Festspielpräsidenten Josef Kaut als »Märchen« ankündigte (vgl. Komm. W 16, 390 f.). Zur für Juli 1976 anvisierten Uraufführung am Salzburger Landestheater, das Bernhard in einem Brief vom 16.12.1974 an Kaut noch als »das schönste Theater der Welt« bezeichnet hatte, sollte es jedoch nicht kommen. Im Sommer 1975 gab das Direktorium der Festspiele unvermittelt zu verstehen, erst nach Vorliegen des Manuskripts entscheiden zu wollen, ob das Stück angesetzt werden würde oder nicht. Zeitgleich begann im Festspielhaus das Gerücht zu kursieren, dass es sich bei Bernhards neuem Werk um eine Beleidigung namhafter Festspielpersönlichkeiten wie Herbert von Karajan handeln würde. In einem Brief an Josef Kaut vom 20.8.1975 annullierte Bernhard schließlich die Abmachung und kündigte an, kein weiteres Stück mehr für die Salzburger Festspiele freigeben geschweige denn schreiben zu wollen: »Die Theatergeschichte hat längst entschieden, wer für wen wichtiger gewesen ist, der Bernhard für die Festspiele oder die Festspiele für den Bernhard« (zit. nach Mittermayer 2001b, 237). Es kam zum Bruch, der Autor zog unter das Kapitel Salzburg einen (vorläufigen) Schlussstrich.
