Title: Production and marketing of blackpepper in Batangas [Philippines]
Abstract: Black pepper is considered one of the most important spices grown in the Philippines because of its many uses such as food seasoning and as medicinal plant. Recognizing its importance, this study was conducted to determine the channels of distribution, and marketing functions performed at the farm level, to estimate production and marketing costs and returns and identify the market structure characterizing the industry. Results of the study showed that production wise, the volume harvested is equal to 14,O07 kg. with an equivalent value of 292,589 pesos or 21.00 pesos per kilo. Marketing of the commodity is being undertaken by most of the farmers. Different types of buyers were identified: namely, wholesalers, agents of wholesalers, wholesaler-retailer, retailer, exporter and/or end-user. Considering the attitudes of buyers towards marketing of black pepper, the market for the commodity has leanings towards oligopoly. At the farmer's level, the black pepper market approaches a purely competitive market. Problems cited by farmers were presence of insect pests, lack of irrigation facilities, high cost of labor, instability of prices and low prices offered by buyers of the crop.
