Title: Investigation of the operation of an industrial extractor by the labelled isotope method
Abstract: Results are presented for an experimental study by the method of radioactive indicators of the rate of decomposition of apatite concentrate, the rate of crystallization of calcium sulfate hemihydrate and the residence time of the slurry in the industrial extractor. The radioactive isotopes used were /sup 198/Au, /sup 32/P and /sup 35/S. The /sup 198/Au isotope was used in the form of a colloid solution, which assured a stable bond between the radioactive isotope and the phosphohemihydrate owing to irreversible adsorption of indicator micelles by solid particles. Labelled /sup 32/P in apatite was of thermal neutrons at an integral dose of 4 x 10/sup 18/ neutron/cm/sup 2/ with a subsequent hold in a protective lead container for 7-10 days in order to reduce the induced activity of short-lived isotopes present as impurity in the apatite. The /sup 35/S isotope was used in the form of sulfuric acid. The quantity of isotope needed per experiment was calculated on the basis of the sensitivity of the radiometric equipment used, the throughput capacity of the system and the duration of the experiment. The beta radiation of /sup 32/P and /sup 35/S was recorded with the aid of a radiometric set consisting of amore » PP-15 scaler and a detector unit with SBT-10 end-window counter. The passage of indicator by observation points was recorded with the aid of a scintillation detector. The measurement range of the SRP-2K radiometer was from 0 to 2500 mCi/hr. An N-373-1 autorecorder served as a second instrument for continuous recording of the radiometer readings. The object of the study was a four-section cylindrical extractor with 150 m/sup 3/ working volume (first section 56 m/sup 3/, second 37 m/sup 3/, third 37 m/sup 3/, fourth 20 m/sup 3/), which was equipped with two- or three-tier paddle-type agitators.« less
