Title: Structural Shape Optimization: An Implementable Algorithm
Abstract: A computational algorithm for optimal shape design of linearly elastic structures is presented. For this problem continuum as well as discrete formulations have been developed and analyzed in the literature. Some computational algorithms have been developed, implemented and evaluated. However, they are mathematically complex and tedious to implement on the computer. In the present paper, a simple procedure for shape design sensitivity analysis and optimization of structures is presented and discussed. It is shown that the method is a simple extension of the isoparametric procedure for finite element analysis. Therefore, it is quite easy to implement with the existing finite element codes that are commercially available. An example is presented to show application of the procedure. The method has also been extended elsewhere for nonlinear problems.
